I’m Chinese. Apparently, I’m supposed to hate The Blind Banker because of its “insensitivity” and “stereotypes.” It’s my favourite episode. I see no issues with it and don’t get where all the disgust comes from.

 Ditto. Although I don’t like largely because Sebastian is a huge dick. And I don’t like seeing people being so mean to each other.

I definitely didn’t think that episode was that bad at first, but then when someone pointed it out I was a little uncomfortable… I think my main problem with that episode is how it’s like “oh gosh exotic Asians!” every time one of the Chinese characters comes on, and they don’t even really seem to try to play with the stereotypes… I think it has a lot to do with exposure. Someone who has been exposed to Chinese culture and a wide variety of Chinese people would be like “oh, that Chinese Circus lady is playing up the exotic thing for the crowd! Isn’t that funny.” or else just not care at all. Whereas someone with little to no exposure to Chinese culture/people might be like “so THIS is what Chinese people are like!” and thus Chinese stereotypes of being exotic/trained in martial arts/tea/etc are perpetuated. 

I’m not saying that all shows have a responsibility to destroy all stereotypes for all minority characters ever because I think that’s unrealistic, but I think those who work in media have a responsibility to consider messages they’re sending out about minorities with the understanding that they are perpetuating popular culture and they have the power to make people question stereotypes. 

Idk, this is just my opinion as a superconsiderateofminoritiesliberalarts kid.
